APPRAISER: You know the name.
GUEST: Zark.
APPRAISER: I think it's one of the nicer pieces of Zark I've ever seen.
GUEST: Really?
APPRAISER: The piece is marked "Zark," which is short for Ozark Pottery, which operated in St.
Louis here from 1906 to about 1910.
Locust Street-- I'm not sure where Locust Street is.
GUEST: Yes.
Downtown, yes.
APPRAISER: Downtown.
What's unusual about it is the naturalistic treatment of the dragonflies.
There's one, two, three dragonflies on here.
GUEST: Right.
APPRAISER: And you will note, also, besides saying "Zark" on the bottom, there are other initials.
That would be the artist who... GUEST: Okay, the potter.
APPRAISER: Yes-- or the person who did the decoration.
GUEST: Okay.
APPRAISER: This is a combination of incising and slip decoration.
I don't know who the artist is.
This brilliant blue may be more prevalent up here than you think.
I think you can use mild soap and warm water.
This might clean up quite a bit.
GUEST: Okay.
APPRAISER: Do you have a sense of value?
GUEST: No, uh, pieces that I was looking at on the internet, I mean, on auction sale, anywhere from a couple of hundred up to a thousand.
I thought, no way would that be in that range.
APPRAISER: Well, I think this is a better example.
GUEST: Whoo!
APPRAISER: And truthfully, talked to my colleagues.
We think a conservative auction estimate would easily be in the $1,500 to $2,500.
GUEST: No, no, no, no, no.
APPRAISER: Maybe $2,000 to $3,000.
GUEST: Are you serious?
APPRAISER: I am.
GUEST: Oh, thank you, Irish gods.
APPRAISER: I told you, I'm not Irish.
GUEST: But I am!
(chuckling) APPRAISER: Continue to take care, 'cause it's a... GUEST: Oh, I will.
APPRAISER: ...it's a sweetie.
GUEST: I love it.
I love it's squat, little body.
